Airline callsigns explained
A callsign is the word air traffic control uses on the radio to name an airline's flights, like Speedbird for British Airways. It sits alongside the IATA and ICAO codes but is spoken, not written, and it is often nothing like the airline's own name.
What is an airline callsign?
Every airline that talks to air traffic control has a radiotelephony callsign: a single word (occasionally two) that a controller says, followed by the flight number, to address one of its aircraft. When a controller clears BA117 for takeoff, they do not say "B A one one seven", they say "Speedbird 117". The callsign keeps the airwaves unambiguous, because letters like B and P or D and T sound alike over a noisy radio, while a distinct word does not.
Callsign vs IATA code vs ICAO code vs flight number
An airline carries several identifiers at once, and it helps to keep them straight:
- IATA code (two characters, e.g.
BA): used on tickets, baggage tags and departure boards. - ICAO code (three letters, e.g.
BAW): used in flight plans and by air traffic control in writing. - Callsign (a spoken word, e.g. Speedbird): used on the radio, paired with the flight number.
- Flight number (the IATA code plus digits, e.g.
BA117): what you book and check in under.
We cover the two written codes in depth in IATA vs ICAO codes. The callsign is the piece that only exists in the air.
Why callsigns rarely match the airline name
Some callsigns are simply the airline's name (American, Delta, Emirates). Many are not, and that is where it gets interesting. The callsign is chosen to be short, distinct on the radio and unlikely to clash with another carrier operating in the same airspace, so airlines reach for heritage names, national symbols or plain invention instead.
| Airline | IATA | ICAO | Callsign |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways | BA | BAW | Speedbird |
| Aer Lingus | EI | EIN | Shamrock |
| South African Airways | SA | SAA | Springbok |
| China Airlines | CI | CAL | Dynasty |
| America West Airlines | HP | AWE | Cactus |
| American Airlines | AA | AAL | American |
| Delta Air Lines | DL | DAL | Delta |
| Emirates | EK | UAE | Emirates |
| Qantas | QF | QFA | Qantas |
| Ryanair | FR | RYR | Ryanair |
British Airways answers to Speedbird, after the winged emblem of its 1930s predecessor Imperial Airways. Aer Lingus is Shamrock, South African Airways is Springbok and China Airlines is Dynasty, each leaning on a national symbol rather than the company name. The now-defunct America West flew as Cactus, a callsign that outlived the merger into US Airways for years.
How the callsign is used in practice
On frequency, the exchange is always callsign first, then flight number: "Speedbird 117, climb flight level 350." Cabin and cockpit crews of the same airline recognise their own callsign instantly, and controllers can keep a dozen carriers apart without spelling out codes letter by letter. A handful of airlines even use a different radio flight number from the one you booked, precisely so two similar-sounding flights on one frequency cannot be mistaken for each other.
Frequently asked questions
What is an airline callsign?
An airline callsign is the word air traffic control uses on the radio to identify a carrier's flights, spoken with the flight number, for example "Speedbird 117". It is the airline's radiotelephony designator, separate from the codes on your ticket.
What is the difference between a callsign and an airline code?
The IATA (two-character) and ICAO (three-letter) codes are written identifiers used on tickets, schedules and flight plans. The callsign is the spoken identifier used over the radio. British Airways is BA (IATA), BAW (ICAO) and "Speedbird" (callsign) all at once.
Why is British Airways' callsign Speedbird?
Speedbird was the name of the winged logo of Imperial Airways, a BA predecessor, in the 1930s. The callsign outlived the logo and the airline, and British Airways still flies as Speedbird today.
Is the callsign the same as the flight number?
No. The flight number is the digits (and IATA code) you book under, like BA117. On the radio that becomes the callsign plus the number, "Speedbird 117". Some flights also use a different radio flight number from the marketed one to avoid confusion between similar-sounding calls.
Do all airlines have a callsign?
Almost all scheduled carriers do. In this dataset most airlines list one; a few small or defunct carriers do not. Where a callsign is on record, it appears on that airline's page alongside its IATA and ICAO codes.
Look up a callsign
Every airline page lists its callsign next to its codes. Browse the airline codes directory, or start from what an IATA code is if you are new to the whole system.
